Avon originally apart of Farmington was called the land of Nod. The congregational church and local settlers occupied the town. With the turnpike running from Providence to Albany, commercial growth was expected, but never came. Since the 1900’s Avon became settled by residents.
Avon Old Farms School, a private boarding school is nestled in a woodsy setting. Along sprawling Route 44 there are restaurants and shopping.
Bordering Farmington, along the Farmington River and with two ponds, Avon has a dog park where dogs frolic with their owners. I have taken my dogs there and have had a wonderful time.
Bloomfield originally habituated by Indians. Once part of Windsor, was an agricultural community, growing mainly shade tobacco.
Today Bloomfield is residential and commercial, home of Cigna.
Burlington a town which was once part of Farmington is very much unsettled, much of the town is owned by three different water sheds. The town is at the foot of the Berkshire Mountains and today is a residential community. Route 4 from Farmington runs through the town to Litchfield County.
Granite and copper deposits, allowed for the manufacturing of flintlock muskets, clocks, coffins and other products. Today these industries have gone by the wayside and is a residential community with some shopping in the center of town. There are a few old cemeteries with folk lore old spiritual tales.
Canton was originally part of Simsbury. The Farmington River runs through the town, in a part of the town Collinsville, a dam was created. The Collins Axe Company located at this dam and became a world supply of axes, later producing precision instruments and die casting. The dam once produced hydroelectric power.
A great adventure which I have done is tubing in the Farmington River, travelling down stream avoiding the rock formations.
Enfield was settled by the Pease brothers from Salem Massachusetts. A plantation town, farming and agriculture. At Powder Horn, gun powder production, known as The Hazard Gunpowder Company.
Today Enfield is residential and some industrial businesses.
Farmington is a historical town, inhabited by the Tunxis tribe Indians, first settled in the early 1600’s by the English. Many historical sites are of interest including the Hill-Stead Museum. George Washington travelled Main Street and enjoyed the homes, as he made frequent visits. The Freedom Trail ran through the original village, which was used free slaves, many residents were abolitionists. In later years several other towns were spun off from the town.
Farming in the early years was the main stay with its rich soil along the Farmington River. The Farmington Canal ran from Northampton to New Haven a valuable trade route. Today the town is home to many large companies and has in the past several years been the headquarters.

Hartford was settled by Protestants from Cambridge Massachusetts, soon there after Dutch Traders from New York joined. For many years Hartford was very prosperous. Insurance later became the dominant business and became known as the Insurance Capitol.
Today the city is mainly occupied by Office Space and Residential Neighborhoods, as well as the capitol of the state.
Simsbury originally inhabited by Indians and later settled by people from Windsor. The town originally a Windsor plantation known as Massacoe. The first steel produced was milled here and the first copper coins.
Simsbury today has industry as well as residential. There is plenty of shopping and restaurants.
The Wampanoag People used the town for winter and spring encampments in the winter and spring. Protestants from Cambridge Massachusetts colonized Hartford, which West Hartford came from part of Hartford. West Hartford was known for farming and gradually industry emerged. The trolley car was responsible for growth from Hartford and the suburbs grew.
Today West Hartford still retains some industry, restaurants, shopping, and residential neighborhoods. In the center of town, Blue Back Square was developed offering residential, shopping and offices.
Windsor Locks separated from Windsor in 1854, an area of grist mills, wool carding and mill work for paper production. In 1940 a military base was constructed.
Today Bradley International Airport finds home, once the military base.
Windsor was a large geographic area; several towns have spun off from its original boundaries. The first highway connected through Windsor from Wethersfield to Springfield. Interconnecting several communities with trade. Ships travelled up the Connecticut River in the later years after the Windsor Locks were constructed.
Today Windsor is residential and commercial, a large industrial area.
